Seventy Five Great Years of the Jeep

Jeep Parts - Just Jeeps

For 75 years, Jeep has managed to do what many manufacturers only dream of: produce iconic products that boast of utilitarian toughness while at the same time adapting to meet the needs of today in order to remain relevant. It is fair to argue that the first Jeeps were the pioneers of the SUV. The history of the Jeep can be traced all the way to the Bantam through to the CJ, YJ, TJ and finally today’s Wrangler.

One of the biggest milestones that the Jeep has undergone happened with the release of the four-door Unlimited model in 2007. This model stretched both the wheelbase and overall length by 20.6’’, a fact that makes the front seats more usable. There is more legroom, more hip and shoulder room and more cargo room in the Unlimited model compared to the two door Wrangler. Also, the longer wheelbase gives this model towing ability.

Jeep Diehards

While the Jeep diehards who were used to the two-door model definitely had some murmuring and moaning to do about this new four-door model, there was a new demographic opened up to the Jeep: the family that wants a vehicle that is practical and family friendly.

Wrangler Models

From 2007, Wrangler models have remained largely unchanged. For the 2017 version, there is the option of LED lighting at an additional fee of $495. There is also a cold weather group available to some of the trims. The 2017 model combines comfort with the already known Jeep style, to give a comfortable snug cabin that has plenty of usable room. And yes, if you have been wondering, the back seats can comfortably accommodate adults, but with a little bit of compromise from the front seat passengers.

The Wrangler Unlimited

Powering the Wrangler Unlimited is by FCA’s 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine that makes 285 hp and 260 lb/ft of torque with a fuel economy rating of 14.7/11.7L/100km (city/hwy). You can expect some bit of bounce on the Wrangler, but that’s because it is made with capability for off-road drives. However, because of the wider wheelbase, there is not too much jiggle as you would expect when a small boat goes into stormy seas. The ride is much smoother, expect with instances of pivoting when you turn a corner, which is to be expected.

While the extra size and convenience of the Wrangler does get in the place of some of the comfort associated with two-door Jeeps, it seems like a small price to pay for all the perks of the Wrangler Unlimited. There is a premium ranging from 2,400 to $2,550 for the four door option, with also the choice of opting for different improvements throughout the machine for improved performance and also, better looks.

Looking beyond its 75th anniversary, Jeep will continue to evolve its Jeep lineup, with a Ram-based Jeep Unlimited pickup likely to be in the future plans of this iconic machine. Loyal fans can look forward to getting the same quality of machines they have been used to, with even more exciting features to try out.
